An Entrepreneur’s Advantage: Sandeep Hariani on the Start Your Business (SYB) Program from SPJIMR

December 22, 2010

The vision: “The most important start for an entrepreneur is to set a goal and define a purpose,” says Sandeep Hariani. His own goal was envisioned in 1996 when he decided to start a business of his own. After working with several companies and serving in different positions — a programmer, people manger, relationship manager, location head, CIO and resource manager — Sandeep finally gained the required experience to run his own company. His venture Vzone Consultancy, Learning Academy and Staffing Services (VCLASS), coaches and mentors students to bring them at par with the high standards expected in today’s tough, competitive and extremely globalised work environment. “I found that the quality of graduates that are coming out of colleges was way behind the expectations of the companies that hire them. Also there is a need for foreign language training with businesses going global and thus, we decided to include that service as well.

Vzone’s USP: VCLASS has a wide range of offerings for graduates just about to enter the workspace. It conducts workshops on communications, effective business writing, resume creation as well as information on various cross cultural issues while doing business with other countries. The venture also imparts consultations on working effectively in organizations, reducing stress, anger management, dealing with customers, delegating work and enhancing teamwork. Translation services for different languages as well as modules on entrepreneurship like creating business propositions for VCs are some of the other services offered by VCLASS.

Sandeep’s SYB experience: Sandeep’s dream got maximum nurturing at a course he took at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) called Start Your Business or the SYB Program. This short course, conducted by SPJIMR, one of the top ten B-schools in India, aims at giving budding entrepreneurs the necessary skills and tools needed to start their own successful businesses. From identifying a vision to creating sustainable business models, this course is designed to serve the many needs of start-ups. According to Sandeep, “This course has helped me with the know-how that I needed to start my own business. I joined this course with two business ideas and was mentored rightly in picking up the one that I have started. One of my passion areas is mentoring and coaching people. After 13 years in the industry, I decided that it’s now time to give back to the industry.”

Connecting point: An important component of the SYB course is that it helps you network with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, marketers, service providers and others from the entrepreneurial ecosystem. One can also interact with start-up mentors for the reality touch and guidance on strengthening the business proposition. These mentors and entrepreneurs provide a first-hand account of the challenges and rewards in the life of an entrepreneur. In addition the course touches on important aspects like working capital management, bootstrapping, market research and raising finance. For Sandeep in particular, the course was an eye-opener on advertising and branding. “I learnt about marketing and bootstrapping at SYB. I designed my own logo, website and brochures and saved a few thousand rupees there. The knowledge I gained at the SYB course has proved very valuable for my business.”
